The Technology Innovation Directorate at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking talented Electronics Engineering & Computer Sciences or related field students to contribute to development of state-of-the-art electronics systems used in a variety of scientific experiments and facilities.

As an intern student you will be part of the Edge Computing Systems department of the Instrumentation Division. This department is responsible for delivering the support instrumentation for many of the scientific programs at SLAC. In this role you will work side by side with our nation's leading scientific minds while also performing R&D on future approaches and technologies in the area of instrumentation. We pride ourselves in complex system design spanning concept, design, testing and operation and maintenance of high-speed data acquisition and electrical control systems for research instrumentation. Some of our current key projects from Instrumentation Division include the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) X-ray laser and high speed X-ray detectors, FACET high energy electron accelerator, Cosmic Microwave Background Stage 4 (CMB-S4) telescope array to be deployed in the Andes and the South Pole, Next Enriched Xenon Observatory (nEXO) which searches for new neutrino physics, Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) and Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS), and development of flight hardware for future space telescopes.

Example projects and responsibilities include (but are not limited) to the following:
  • Script development using Python for Machine Learning
  • Hands on firmware development for FPGAs and ASICs using VHDL and/or Verilog and/or HLS
  • Documentation of existing firmware and software libraries
  • Testing of electronics and associated software platforms

Note: This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible casual-nonexempt position (working less than 50% full-time equivalent), not to exceed 980 hours in a calendar year. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age and currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated and have US work authorization. All accepted candidates must have or be able to timely acquire US work authorization. A minimum commitment requested is 12 weeks.

To be successful in this position:
  • Must be currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated.
  • Interest in electronics engineering or related field
  • Basic programming skills in C/C++ and python.
  • Experience with Xilinx Vivado and VHDL preferred.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

The expected pay range for this position is $24.20 to $29.15 per hour. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
