JOB TITLE: Leaf and Limb Collection Driver PW17/NE09
DEPARTMENT: Public Works, City of Waycross
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for operating a truck along a route to collect leaves and limbs.
WORKING HOURS: Employees are required to start work at 7:00 AM and work until 3:30 PM Monday through Friday. They also receive a half-hour lunch break that begins at 12:00 and ends at 12:30 PM.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Inspects the truck prior to leaving on route to ensure that it is properly cleaned, serviced, and equipped.
- Drives a truck along a route to collect leaves and limbs.
- Utilizes a boom and claw attachment to pick up yard waste.
- May use a rake, pitchfork, or sidearm truck to collect leaves from roadsides.
- Removes prohibited materials, such as metal, bricks, and wood, from yard waste.
- Transports leaves and limbs for disposal.
- Operates a front-end loader and forklift.
- Drives a truck along a predetermined route to pick up discarded furniture and appliances.
- Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on the truck.
- Maintains daily work records.
- Performs general housekeeping duties at the shop.
- Assigned call on rotational basis.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of the geographic layout of the city.
- Knowledge of leaf and limb routes.
- Knowledge of department and safety rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of the operation of the truck and related equipment.
- Skill in using a pitchfork.
- Skill in defensive driving techniques.
- Skills in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Solid Waste Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor reviews work in progress and upon completion for compliance with instructions and established procedures and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include state traffic laws, department safety rules and regulations, city ordinances, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties, such as driving a truck to collect leaves and limbs. Inclement weather and traffic conditions contribute to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this assignment is to drive a truck along predetermined routes to collect leaves, limbs, and other materials. Successful performance in this position helps ensure a clean environment and provides a timely service to city residents.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to exchange information and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a truck and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, or hard hats.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Sufficient experience in understanding the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of a valid CDL Class B driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
