Job Summary
The License Funeral Director provides compassionate, professional support to families during a time of loss while overseeing the logistical and ceremonial aspects of funeral services. This role is also responsible for the respectful and professional preparation of the deceased, including embalming, cosmetology, and dressing.

Key Responsibilities
Funeral arrangements and direction:

  • Meet with grieving families to arrange all aspects of a funeral service, including visitation, memorial services, burial, or cremation.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for families, providing guidance on funeral service options, merchandise selection, and legal requirements.
  • Coordinate with clergy, cemeteries, crematories, and other external parties to ensure a smooth and respectful service.
  • Prepare and file all necessary legal documents, such as death certificates and burial permits.
  • Plan, organize, and direct funeral and memorial ceremonies, and oversee the funeral possession.
  • Handle financial matters, including negotiating contracts and collecting payments, in a respectful manner.
  • Provide grief support and information on available aftercare resources to families.

Embalming and Preparation

  • Perform all embalming procedures in accordance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices, treating the deceased with the upmost dignity and respect.
  • Perform restorative art procedures and apply cosmetology to prepare the body for viewing.
  • Dress, casket, and prepare the deceased for visitation and funeral services based on the family wishes.
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and organized preparation room and all embalming equipment.
  • Conduct removals and transfers of the deceased from the place of death to the funeral home.

Administrative and operational duties:

  • Respond promptly to “first calls” and be available on a rotational on-call basis for removals.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records and paperwork related to services, cremations, and embalming procedures.
  • Ensure the funeral home operates in full compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and licensing laws.
  • Participate in general maintenance and upkeep of the funeral home, vehicles, and grounds.
  • Manage inventory of funeral supplies and merchandise.

Required qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Funeral Director and Embalmer license in the state of Texas

Education:

  • Completion of an accredited mortuary science program (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree required).

Experience:

  • A minimum of 1-3 years of experience as a licensed Funeral Director/Embalmer, including completion of a state-required apprenticeship.

Driver’s license:

  • A valid drivers license with an insurable driving record is required.
