This is an on-site position at our Reston Association’ s Nature Center.

Position Overview

Are you passionate about connecting people with nature and inspiring environmental stewardship? At Reston Association (RA), we’re committed to enhancing the quality of life for Reston residents through outstanding programs, exceptional services, and dedicated care of our community’s natural and recreational resources.

We are currently seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Naturalist to join our team at the Walker Nature Center. In this dynamic role, you will design and lead engaging environmental education programs for all ages, with a focus on fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world. You’ll also develop informative materials such as brochures, trail guides, and exhibits, and support citizen science initiatives and wildlife monitoring efforts throughout Reston.

Beyond programming, you’ll play a key role in maintaining and enhancing the Nature Center’s 72-acre grounds, including trails, habitat gardens, and natural features like ponds and streams. You’ll help implement habitat restoration projects, manage invasive species, and support biodiversity through hands-on conservation work. Your responsibilities will also include maintaining live animal exhibits, managing program supplies, and assisting with the daily operations of the Nature House facility. You’ll also take the lead on citizen science initiatives, helping engage the community in meaningful data collection and environmental monitoring. As a visible ambassador for the Nature Center, you should be comfortable participating in video productions, creating engaging social media content, and actively representing RA in community outreach efforts. Collaboration is key, you’ll work closely with volunteers, seasonal staff, and community partners to deliver high-quality programming and ensure the Nature Center remains a welcoming, safe, and inspiring space for all visitors.

What You’ll Bring

• Age 21 or older.
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Education, Natural Resources, or a related field.
• A minimum of two years of experience in environmental education, interpretation, or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of local ecology, native plants, wildlife, and conservation practices.
• Excellent communication, teaching, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to plan, and lead, creative hands-on programs in both indoor and outdoor settings.
• A team player with leadership potential, you have experience working with volunteers and/or supervising seasonal staff.
• Proficiency in using common social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Youtube) to inform, engage, and connect with the community in support of environmental education and outreach initiatives
• Skilled with the use of Microsoft Office and recreation management software, specifically RecTrac.
• CPR and First Aid certification (preferred); additional certifications in environmental education or interpretation are desirable.
• You have a commitment to community engagement, are eager to build relationships with residents, fellow staff and support RA’s mission.
• A valid driver’s license and ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
• Physically ready for adventure- you’re able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varied outdoor conditions.
