Job Description

The recovery coach will be an integral member of the I-CARE lab (Infectious Complications Assessment and Research Lab) in the Infectious Diseases Section at Boston Medical Center. As part of the team, the recovery coach will be trained to deliver an intervention for a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to improve access to HIV prevention services for persons who use drugs. Working under the close direction of the Program Manager, the Recovery Coach will connect and engage individuals who inject opioids and individuals with substance use / opioid use disorder (OUD) services. Must have applicable knowledge of recovery support systems including but not limited to; medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), harm reduction practices, and supportive social services for persons who inject opioids. The successful applicant will be in long-term recovery, demonstrate knowledge of trauma-informed care and motivational interviewing, and have positive beliefs and feelings regarding individuals who use or have used substances and all paths to recovery. As part of the position, the recovery coach will be trained to use an evidence based, manualized intervention to work with people who inject opioids. Personal experience and recovery from substance use disorder is vital in this role. Essential responsibilities include direct care work such as facilitating HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and MOUD initiation and adherence, facilitating referrals to treatment programs, creating person-focused wellness plans, initiating contact with participants, providing feedback, assisting with obstacles to adherence and recovery, and serving as a role model and advocate. Outreach duties include establishing relationships with organizations to connect participants with housing, employment, health and social services, and recovery support emphasizing harm reduction and medication management. Administrative duties include maintaining accurate participant records, data entry, reviewing data with the Program Manager, case review, troubleshooting, and general administrative tasks. The role requires adherence to BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards. Education required is a High School Diploma or GED. Certification required is Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) within 6 months of hire. CPR/First Aid preferred but training provided. Experience required is 3-5 years working with patients with SUD or mental health issues (2 years with bachelor’s degree accepted), experience with Microsoft Office, and preferred experience with individuals experiencing homelessness, SUD, or behavioral health needs. Personal experience with substance use disorder and long-term recovery is required. Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of substance use disorders, harm reduction, recovery support systems, trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, compassion, familiarity with medical and research settings, interpersonal and leadership skills, ability to work independently and in teams, advocacy skills, comfort with all recovery pathways, and effective communication.
