Full-time School Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) for 2025-2026 School Year

Location: Portsmouth, Virginia
Hours: 7.5 hours/day, 37.5 hours/week (Full-Time)
Term: August 11, 2025 - June 1, 2026 (Full School Year)

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to provide essential communication access for high school students in Portsmouth, VA, for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year. This full-time position involves interpreting in both one-on-one and classroom capacities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide accurate and effective sign language interpreting services for high school students in various educational settings, including classrooms, meetings, and extracurricular activities.

  • Interpret spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) or other appropriate sign systems, and signed communication into spoken English.

  • Facilitate communication between deaf/hard-of-hearing students, hearing peers, teachers, and other school personnel.

  • Adapt interpreting style and vocabulary to meet the diverse communication needs and preferences of individual students.

  • Collaborate with teachers and school staff to prepare for assignments, review lesson plans, and understand subject matter to ensure accurate interpretation.

  • May assist with light paraeducator duties as needed to support student learning and classroom management.

  • Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to the educational team's efforts to support student success.

Qualifications:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by training in signing and considerable experience as an interpreter.

  • Must possess or be eligible to obtain a Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III, or its equivalent, as determined by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing, upon the hiring date.

  • Candidates with a VQAS Level II certification will have two years from the date of hire to obtain Level III certification in accordance with Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) regulations.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and/or other appropriate sign language systems.

  • Strong understanding of deaf culture and the educational needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills.
